Why recycling your old phone is important!

Posted by Daniella Parker on

Almost everyone on this planet owns a mobile phone or another communication device, and within a few years, they will need an upgrade/new one. However, technology progresses every day, and as such, by the time a device is released to the public, the technology within the device has already started becoming obsolete.

E-waste has become a global issue over the last few years

While it may at first seem like there is very little we can do about it, if every household in the UK alone began recycling their old devices, we could save up to 23.9kg per capita of electronic waste from ending up in landfills.

Throwing your phone away is detrimental to the environment; that device will end up in landfills and join the 50 million tonnes of electric waste produced globally yearly! In fact, according to the Royal Mint, e-waste is set to reach up to 74 million tonnes a year.

You’d assume that if the world creates 50 million tonnes of e-waste every year, then a large quantity is recycled, right? But, unfortunately, you’d be wrong. The truth is that less than 20% is collected and recycled.

E-waste is not biodegradable and can contribute to air pollution!

How? When e-waste is exposed to heat, toxic chemicals are released into the air damaging the atmosphere. Those toxic chemicals can also seep into water supplies and deep into the earth, causing astronomical issues for wildlife.

So how can YOU help stop this? Recycle your devices!

Recycling your devices prevents those said devices from ending up in landfills; the metals within them can be mined and made into new products!

Companies like ours, Gecko Mobile, Will take your old device (and pay you for said device!) and then refurbish it! We change the battery and screen and then resell the device. Stopping it from sitting in a landfill and giving the device a new home for someone else to enjoy.

And of course, you don’t need to sell your old phones, tablets and smart watches through Gecko Mobile, but doing so comes with many advantages. Such as our price promise! Get the price you’re quoted guaranteed. Or our same-day pay, instant bank transfer the same day we process your device. And if that isn’t enough for you, check out our fabulous reviews.

The fact of the matter is that recycling your old phones, tablets, and watches is not only is it an excellent way to make a little extra money for something you no longer want, need or use. But it’s a massive benefit to the planet itself, as well as for those in need of quick cash; recycling benefits us all; there is no reason not to recycle your devices.

Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post, and thank you for taking an interest in keeping our planet intact for our future generations to enjoy.
